Who We Are
Carolina Mountains Literary Festival is a nonprofit organization striving to foster community by supporting and celebrating literacy and the love of literature in the Southern Appalachians.
Our Goals
To gather annually with a three-day festival celebrating literature and each other. To reach out to schools, senior centers, and our community to encourage reading, conversation, and understanding to those of all ages. To nurture the love of literature, learning, and civil conversation throughout the entire year.
Our Needs
To extend our reach beyond the three-day festival, we must expand our funding base. Our much larger vision of what we can bring to the Toe River Valley will require additional resources. We have been fortunate to have strong support from the local community and various funding sources.

What we’ve done
16 years of community growth.
For the past 16 years, we have successfully built thriving communities of readers, writers, and thinkers.
Our 2023 festival gathered over 400 participants from 28 North Carolina counties and cities and 6 other states.
Throughout our 16 festivals, nearly 400 renowned and emerging writers have engaged with readers of all ages, nurturing a love of literature.
There’s so much more to do.
By focusing on literature and literacy, Carolina Mountains Literary Festival will positively influence students in schools and youth organizations.
We will continue to encourage lifelong learning for adults through our workshops and other programs.
We will create opportunities for writers and readers to connect regularly, fostering stronger, more literate communities.
